Activity Series

Objective

To perform single replacement reactions and correlate the reactions that occur vs. the ones that don't with the activity series for metals.

Plan

  1. React each of a series of metals (Mg, Zn, Cu, and Pb) with 1.0 M solutions containing each of the corresponding +2 ions (Mg(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, Cu(NO3)2, and Pb(NO3)2).  Use approximately 1 mL of solution.
  2. Note which reactions occur.  (Look for a precipitate in the bottom of the well or a deposit on the metal.)  A solid metal that can reduce another metal (by becoming oxidized) has a higher oxidation potential, and is therefore higher on the activity series

Data Table

You may find it helpful to organize your data according to the following table:

Cu2+

Pb2+

Zn2+

Mg2+

Cu

Pb

Zn
